Welcome to the Social Implications Page of QCVL!

QCVL machines dispense standard packs of three DUREX® condoms (the world's #1 brand). We sell these machines worldwide. The business model is based on the successful UK model.

QCVL was founded in Nova Scotia by a family physician who immigrated to Canada from England in 1989. He realized that Canada had very few condom vending machines and the ones that there were, did not dispense major brand condoms. He developed a condom vending machine (the QCVL Display Machine) which was designed to address the problems listed below.

The present North American business model has several deficiencies that account for the relative absence of condom vending machines in Canada.

bulletThe condoms dispensed are often unknown brands that do not inspire confidence.
bulletThere is little profit margin as an incentive for people to purchase and operate machines (profit is much greater when condoms are sold in packs of three, and people should have more than just one condom).
bulletThe vending machines deliver poor value to the customer, usually charging $1 (in Canada) for a single cheap brand condom. Compare the attractive QCVL machines, which charge from $2 to $4 (Canada) for a pack of three top brand condoms including full instruction and health advice leaflet in each pack.
bulletUnattractive, and uninviting machines.
bulletThe machines have no display window and people are unable to see what they are buying.

The QCVL project as outlined on this web site has developed a solution to all of these problems.

Vending machines make condoms easily available, often at the crucial time and place, and with the minimum of embarrassment, (many people find it very difficult to buy condoms from a shop; see links below).

We estimate that every machine sold will prevent at least one case of AIDS on average, in some countries many more. Because AIDS is a communicable illness, all of the cases that would have resulted from that single person will also be prevented. AIDS often affects young people and children. Condoms are an extremely effective preventative measure, and condom vending machines should be available wherever alcohol is served. People are less careful with their health after a few drinks. Unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections other than AIDS can also have devastating affects on people's lives.
